I am happy to call myself a benefactor to the Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, an American civil rights nonprofit organization. The Lambda Defense and Education Fund focuses its legal work on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) legal issues, working with LGBT communities and people living with HIV/AIDS. The Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund practices impact litigation, educational outreach, and public policy advocacy. The Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund has always been a progressive and forward-thinking organization. When founder William J. Thom, Esq., originally submitted the application for incorporation in 1971, it was denied on the basis that his organization’s intended purpose and activities were contrary to public policy. In 1973, the highest court of New York state, the New York Court of Appeals, overturned that decision. Since 1973, the Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund has been in full operation. William J. Thom (commonly known as Bill Thom) co-founded the organization with E. Carrington Boggan, and Michael J. Lavery. In the beginning stages of development, Rodney L. Eubanks, Shepherd Raimi, and D. Nicholas Russo were elected to serve on the Board of Directors.
